Mishima chawan with gohonte effect glaze.
Collected on our Japan travels in the spring of 2025, a summer saucer style of chawan designed to keep your matcha cool in the warmer days.
Originally developed in Korea, mishima ceramics apply a decorative technique called slip-inlay. Designs are carved and stamped into the surface of the bowl before being coated in a white slip. The excess is then scraped off, leaving only the designs filled with the slip. Finally, the piece is finished with a transparent ash glaze and fired "in reduction". In this process the kiln atmosphere is deliberately deprived of oxygen which forcing the flames to "steal" oxygen from the clay itself. This results in the spots of colour on the surface.
