Kurihara Tea Farm & Factory

Kurihara Seicha is located in Yabe Village, deep in the mountains of the Yame region in southern Fukuoka Prefecture. The tea is grown slowly in gardens located at a high elevation, with fertile soil and misty mornings, creating leaves with a deep earthy aroma.

A note from the farmer

One passage in Japan's ancient history book, the Nihon Shoki, mentions our Yabe village and Yame-tsuhime. When Emperor Keiko was on a tour, he saw the mountains in the area of present-day Yabe village and asked, "Those mountain peaks are layered one on top of the other, and their beauty is magnificent. Is there a god in that mountain?" The local lord replied, "There is a goddess, called Yame-tsuhime, who always resides in the mountains." This is said to be the origin of the place name Yame as it is today.

Kurihara Seicha's tea fields and factory are both located here. Yamecha tea is cultivated here, overseen by Yame-tsuhime, a land that exudes the spirit of ancient romance. We cherish the history of Yame-tsuhime and wish to preserve its legacy, so we named our tea after the "hime" (sea lily) that we lovingly cultivate. Kurihara Seicha's tea is characterised by its rich aroma, thanks to its mountainous cultivation area. Furthermore, the land's pristine water and air produce tea with a perfect balance of umami and astringency. We strive every day to cultivate tea with the thought in mind: "Thinking of people, loving the forest, and coexisting with nature." We hope you will enjoy this "Himecha" tea, even as it brings good luck. Please enjoy the natural flavor and aroma to your heart's content.

Collection: Kurihara Tea Farm

The Kurihara brothers, Akio and Yuji, are 4th generation tea farmers, having taken over from their father, Kippei Kurihara.

Akio is in charge of the actual farming, while elder brother Yuji is in charge of the business.

The tea is grown in an area rich in nature, with clear air and clean water from the rhythmic flow of the source of the Yabe River. The highest elevation of Kurihara Tea's tea fields is a whopping 700m. With large temperature differences between day and night and frequent mist, it is the perfect place for tea cultivation.
