Oribe Katakuchi made by Minami Kiln in Daichi-cho for Saliu Japan. This family owned kiln is famous for creating individual works with originality. All pieces are hand thrown and glazed.Â
These katakuchi are made with a unique clay mix including coarse clay and iron rich clay. A glaze that changes with the kiln temperature is also used making each piece individual. The works have an enjoyable rough texture and individual characteristics such a dark spots from the iron or pinholes on the glaze surface. Some pieces may have small "cracks" knows as crazing. Some will have crazing that develops as they are used, these are part of the natural patina of the ceramic and are not a sign of damage.Â
Minami Gama is run by traditional craftsman Takumi Kudo and his wife Yukie Kudo. Takumi Kudo was awarded the Mino-ware Traditional Craftsman award in 2005. Together the husbamnd and wife duo oversee every stage of production from kneading clay and throwing to mixing glazes, painting, and firing â creating everyday tableware imbued with quiet beauty and sincerity.
"Kohiki" is a type of pottery fired by applying a white glaze over a white slip of earthenware. There is a warmth and gentle texture to the clay and the more it is used, the more its expression changes and its flavour deepens.
