Oni Hagi ware Matcha Tea Bowl from Tenryu Kiln
Made by ceramic artist Itsuo Mito for Tenryu Kiln these saucer style chawan are beautiful to show the contrast between the pale glaze and bright green tea.
This type of glaze originated when Korean potters settled in Hagi, Yamaguchi prefecture, Japan. The white style of Hagi ware known as Oni Hagi-yaki (demon glaze) was developed by the Miwa family, one of the most highly regarded potting families in Japan.
The pale glaze of hagi-yaki ceramics and is seen as part of the charm of these tea vessels. When the bowls are used the tea is absorbed through these fine cracks into the soft clay beneath. This slowly stains making the crackle glaze more visible. This gradual change in colour is commonly referred to as “the seven transformations of Hagi” or “Hagi no nanabake”.
