Vintage: Kuro-Oribe Chawan
Vintage: Kuro-Oribe Chawan
Black Oribe matcha tea bowl
This expertly thrown chawan is covered with the typical, glossy black iron oxide glaze inside and outside, leaving unglazed 'windows' on either side. The 'window' is decorated with abstract shapes in iron oxide glaze which has then been covered with a clear ash and feldspar glaze.
Oribe ware is decorated with abstract designs and is known for its asymmetrical shapes and flowing glazes in both green and black. The green oribe is painted with green copper-sulfate glaze that contrasts the light base.
Please Note: This chawan has signs of use in the base of the bowl where the glaze is slightly worn revealing the clay below.
