Oni Hagi-yaki Tea Cup Set from Tenryu Kiln
Â
A pair of hagi ware yunomi cups featuring a crackle "oni-yaki" glaze and traditional cut foot. One of the pair is slightly larger than the other. Made by the Tenryu kiln.
This type of glaze style originated when Korean potters settled in Hagi, Yamaguchi prefecture, Japan. The white cracked style of Hagi ware known as Oni Hagi-yaki (demon glaze) was developed by the Miwa family, one of the most highly regarded potting families in Japan.
This crackle feature on the surface of the glaze is typical of hagi-yaki ceramics and is seen as part of the charm of these tea vessels. When the tea cups are used the tea is absorbed through these fine cracks into the soft clay beneath. This slowly stains making the crackle glaze more visible. This gradual change in colour is commonly referred to as âthe seven transformations of Hagiâ or âHagi no nanabakeâ.
