Hishaku ladle for tea ceremony by Suikaen Takayama Chasen.

These Kenyon Hishaku have been designed to be suitable for both summer and winter tea ceremony.

Traditional matcha ceremony changes depending on the season. One of the major changes is the type of chagama (tea kettle) that is used. In the winter months when it is colder, the tea brazier will be sunken into the tatami, more hot water is used to make matcha and help guests keep warm. This calls for a slightly larger hishaku called Royo
In the summer, as the weather is much warmer, less hot water is needed, the chagama is set above the tatami and the hishaku size is smaller. This smaller hishaku is called Furoyo
This Kenyon Hishaku is a size that sits in the middle of these two allowing it to be used across all four seasons with ease.
  • Size: approx 42 cm length | 5.5cm ladle diameter | 5.5 ladle depth

About Suikaen: The current family head is the 25th generation to make chasen and. tea ceremony utensils in the same way that his ancestors did. The tools and techniques that were passed down are still used today.
