Founded 150 years ago, the pottery manufacturer Shinzan Gama Yamatsu continues to challenge itself to create products that fit modern times while preserving tradition .

The Ice Flower teacup series features different patterns carved into the porcelain. This teacup mukuge has the shape of the large, glossy, delicate petals thinly made. This is a dainty cup with the motif of a tea flower (chaka*chabana). Mukuge are large flowers that bloom in midsummer. Originally brought from China and cultivated since the Heian period (794-1192)

The light passes through the white porcelain clay so you can see the colour of the tea through the wall of the cup.

What is Chabana?
Sen no Rikyu, a famous tea ceremony master described chabana as "flowers in the field"
Chabana refers to the flowers that decorate the tea ceremony table in a modest way that reflects the seasons.

The flowers in the field are what make us feel "wabi and sabi," and the simple but modest tea ceremony teachings are etched into this simple cup.
