Shira-hagi yaki Matcha Tea Bowl with Lip
This chawan is glazed with straw ash. Each piece is unique as the pattern made by the glaze can never be recreated exactly. Enjoy the contrast between white and dark reddish brown, as well as the earthenware taste.
Use this bowl to whisk up your matcha. The lip makes it easy to serve from or you can enjoy straight from the bowl.
One of the characteristics of the hagi-ware glaze is that there is a slight crackle on the surface. These crackles will become seasoned with use over time. This gradual change in colour is commonly referred to as “the seven transformations of Hagi” or “Hagi no nanabake”.The while glaze will crackle and change with use.

About the Kiln: Senryuzan kiln was founded in 1826. The kiln is comprised of a small collective of artisans who create preserve traditional hagi techniques to this day.
"We turn the potter's wheel by hand, without relying on machines, and allow the artisan's breath and timing to be reflected in the clay, imprinting the flavour and warmth of the human touch."
Senryuzan uses a traditional climbing kiln to fire the work. They do not rely on material suppliers, but instead refine the clay and glazes in-house.
The colour and texture are determined by various conditions, such as compatibility with the kiln, firing temperature and time. They use their own unique blending techniques based on many years of experience, in addition to the traditional Hagi ware recipes.
