This tea has been created based on the Shojin-ryori food culture of Yakuo-in temple which has an history of over 1200 years. This style of cooking is a Buddhist vegetarian cuisine created on the ideal of venerating all forms of life and bringing forth the bounty of nature. This traditional style of cooking views food as medicine and this tea has been created with this philosophy.

The blend has been created from herbs and plants that have been highly sort after since ancient times for their healing benefits. Suitable for people of all ages this tea makes the perfect caffeine free evening drink or, have it iced for a refreshing cold tea on a warm day.

Steeping notes:

  1. Teapot - 1 bag | Boiling water | 400ml | 3-4 mins
  2. Boiling on the hob - 1-2 bags in a large pot of water, bring to the boil and simmer for 5 mins.

About Yakuo-in Yuki-ji: This temple that sits near the summit of Mt.Takao was established on the orders of the Emperor Shomu in 744 and founded by priest Gyoki who also has links to the Daibutsu at Todai-ji in Nara

The principle deity enshrined at Yakuo-in is Izuna Daigongen and as with the other temple we collected tea from during our travels Daiyuzan Saijoji, this mountain has strong links to the Tengu. They are said to dwell on this sacred mountain and many statues of them can be found around the temple precinct.
