About Daiyuzan Saijoji: This temple deep in the mountains is surrounded by ancient cedar forests and abundant nature. The sound of water, frogs birds fill the air.
There are many legends about Tengu in Japan, these deities are both feared and respected. The connection between this temple and the Tengu stems back to the founding of the mountain. Throughout the precinct you can find many Large Tengu-sama, Dai-tengu and various Geta including a pair that are said to be the biggest in the world.
When Ryoan Emyō Zenji, the founder of Saijoji, passed away at the age of 75, it is said that he took on the form of a Tengu and flew away deep into the mountains to protect the temple forever.
Climb the 350-plus steps surrounded by dense old cedar trees to reach the Okunoin, where the Gohonchi Eleven-Faced Kanzeon Bosatsu is enshrined. Although it is located at the highest point of Mt. Daiyuzan, many pilgrims come to visit after climbing these stairs. It was from this at this shrine that we bought this loose leaf hojicha tea.
