Vintage: Bizen Hidasuki Chawan

Bizen-yaki matcha tea bowl 

This unglazed wheel thrown tea bowl is traditionally fired wrapped in rice paper straw. This wrapping creates orange burn marks where the alkaline in the straw reacts with the iron in the clay. 

The signature of the potter is carved into the base of the bowl. 

Bizen is known of one of Japan's Six Ancient Kilns dating back to at the 14th Century. Bien ware is fired in wood burning kilns for long periods of time. It is known for its unglazed finish and warm colour palate.
