Mino ware Tengu Daruma Doll by Utsuwa Roan
Traditional Daruma dolls are modelled after Bodhidharma, the founder of Zen Buddhism. The dolls are typically made form paper mache and they are given as a popular gift.
These ceramic Daruma dolls have the face of the Tengu. Tengu are a shinto deity that are known to reside in nature protecting mountains and forests. Places such as Mt. Kurama in Kyoto and Mt. Takao in Tokyo are dedicated to the Tengu kami.
