Hagi-yaki Purple Ombre Cup from Tsubakihide kiln

The ombre glaze of these cups is slightly crackled. This crackle is typical of hagi-yaki ceramics and is seen as part of the charm of these tea vessels. When the tea cups are used the tea is absorbed through these fine cracks into the soft clay beneath. This slowly stains making the crackle glaze more visible. This gradual change in colour is commonly referred to as “the seven transformations of Hagi” or “Hagi no nanabake”.

  • Size: approx 7.5cm diameter | 9cm height
  • Made in Hagi City, Yamauchi Prefecture
  • Hand wash only
  • Care Tips: Wash before use. These hagiware cups are porous so it is important to make sure they are fully dry before storage after use.

About Hagiyaki: Hagi ware is also known as Korai ware, it's origins date back to the Keicho period when the lord of the Mori domain bought Korean potters to Japan. The tradition started by these potters contiues to this day.
