Azuma Tea Garden Asahi Cultivar,

Ceremonial Grade Matcha

30g

The Asahi cultivar was developed in Kyoto in the 1970s and is well known for providing leaves that create the highest grade of matcha.

Asahi is however a notoriously difficult cultivar to grow, especially when cultivating without use of pesticides or chemical fertilisers.

This matcha comes from single-origin Kyoto tea with no artificial preservatives or chemical additives.

  • Cultivar: Asahi
  • Harvest: Spring
  • Region: Wazuka Village, Kyoto
  • Notes: Grown pesticide-free. No artificial colouring, preservatives, or chemical additives.
  • Producer: Azuma Tea Garden, Family-operated tea garden

About The Growers: The Azuma Tea Garden is a family-operated, fourth-generation farm specializing in Tencha tea leaf cultivation and processing. Founded in the late 19th century the family manages tea fields in the mountains of Wazuka, Kyoto, Japan. While not fully certified organic yet, they are in the process of converting to organic cultivation.

"Wazuka-cho in Kyoto is known as the main production region of Uji tea. Surrounded by mountains, river, clean air and rich soil, Wazuka is a region suited for growing tea. Our tea fields are located in the eastern part of Wazuka-cho, where neither trains nor major road runs. The scenery of endless tea fields is designated as Kyoto's "cultural landscape"

Unexpectedly bitter

I just had my first taste of this Matcha, and it is surprisingly bitter. There’s very little umami taste, none of the usual yeasty aroma. It’s overwhelmed by a harsh bitterness. I had assumed this was supposed to be ceremonial grade, but it’s nowhere near as good as the other matches that I’ve had from Tencha.
