This type of glaze originated when Korean potters settled in Hagi, Yamaguchi prefecture, Japan. The white style of Hagi ware known as Oni Hagi-yaki (demon glaze) was developed by the Miwa family, one of the most highly regarded potting families in Japan.
This cup has a white glaze with a blue tint. The crackle of the glaze is smoother in some areas and more defined in others. This style of ceramic was originally brought over to Japan from Korea in the 1600s.
One of the characteristics of the hagi-ware glaze is that there is a slight crackle on the surface. These crackles will become seasoned with use over time.Ā This gradual change in colour is commonly referred to as āthe seven transformations of Hagiā or āHagi no nanabakeā.
