Bizen {Sankiri} Yunomi Teacup
The flame glaze on each of these hand thrown cups is so unique that we have listed them individually below.
The part of the piece that has colour change is called "natural cleavage". When the kiln is finished firing, charcoal is thrown in around the pieces. The technique is called "Sankiri,". It is a method of creating a contrasting colour change in certain areas by the strong flame of the charcoal and the reduction of carbon monoxide.
Bizen is one of the six ancient kilns of Japan. This is a style of pottery that perfectly expresses the Japanese idea of "wabi sabi", the spirit of the tea ceremony. It was loved by tea masters such as Sen no Rikyu and recommended by tea professionals ever since.
